Bloomberg TV recently explored the reasons behind the mothballing of the Bataang nuclear power plant. According to Mauro Marcelo Jr., the manager of decommissioned plants for Philippines’ National Power Corporation, operations were shut down before the plant went critical because of the Chernobyl meltdown. But, the plant is reportedly built up to the highest safety standards, with higher safety measures than even the Fukushima Daiichi plant. He suspects that the unused power plant will either become some sort of tourist attraction or, better, be turned on.
