A new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), titled “The Role of Nuclear Energy in a Low-Carbon Energy Future,” details and emphasizes the important role that nuclear energy plays in generating the world’s electricity, according to an article in World Nuclear News. The report also analyzed nuclear energy’s impact on the environment and its prospects for expansion. It concluded that while the nuclear process produced lower carbon emissions than fossil fuels, the initial high costs of the construction of nuclear plants likely meant government funding would be necessary.
The report drew its findings from studies from groups such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Nuclear Association and the International Energy Agency. Thirty countries are members of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency.
